LinkedIn text formatter

LinkedIn has no bold button. Format your post in this editor: style a few words in bold, italic or underline, add bullets, check the length, and copy it straight into LinkedIn.

How to use it

Format a LinkedIn post in three steps.

  1. 01

    Write or paste

Type your post in the box, or paste one you've drafted.

  2. 02

    Style the words

Select a few words and pick Bold, Italic, Underline or another style. With nothing selected, the style applies to the whole post.

  3. 03

    Copy it to LinkedIn

Click “Copy for LinkedIn” and paste into a post, a comment, a message, your headline or your About section.

How it works

Not formatting: different letters.

LinkedIn stores posts as plain text, so there's nothing to make bold. But Unicode, the list of every character computers know, has a block of letters drawn bold, italic or in monospace, made for mathematics: a bold A there is not an A in bold, it's its own character, U+1D5D4, “mathematical sans-serif bold capital A”.

The formatter swaps each letter for its styled twin. Underline and strikethrough work differently: a combining line (U+0332 or U+0336) after each character draws through or under it. Because these are characters, not formatting, they survive copy and paste into any text box, and “Clear style” turns them back into plain letters.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Can you bold text on LinkedIn?
Not in posts: LinkedIn's post editor has no bold or italic button. This tool swaps your letters for Unicode characters that look bold, italic or underlined. They're ordinary characters, so they stay styled wherever you paste them.
Where does the formatting work?
Anywhere LinkedIn takes text: posts, comments, messages, your headline and your About section. Unicode characters show on LinkedIn's apps and website alike.
Why aren't some characters styled?
Only A to Z, a to z and digits have styled versions in Unicode. Accented letters, emoji and punctuation stay as they are, and italic has no styled digits.
Is styled text bad for accessibility or search?
Use it for a few words, not whole paragraphs. Screen readers can read styled letters one by one or skip them, and search, on LinkedIn or Google, may not match styled words. Keep names, keywords and hashtags in plain text.
Does formatting change the character count?
Each styled letter counts as one character here, the way Lempile's API counts posts. LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters in a post and 200 in a connection note, and comments take up to 1,250; keep a small margin under the limit.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser: the text isn't sent to Lempile, to LinkedIn or anywhere else.
Can I publish formatted posts through an API?
Yes. Lempile's LinkedIn API publishes a post with POST /api/v1/posts from a connected account: the text as you wrote it, styled characters included, with mentions, images or a video.
